THE BOOK OF DANIEL

chapter 12

According to the Septuagint OLD GREEK manuscripts, kept hidden from English eyes for thousands of years until 2012!

This is a presentation of the book of Daniel with commentary to help establish the timing of the book, and historical context. I also look at the themes and usage of different words used in context. The translation is from Logos Bible Software where it is called the Lexham English Septuagint (LES - copied with permission from Logos Bible Software).

12 LES

12:1 “And toward that country, Michael, the great messenger who stands over the sons of your people, will go by. That will be a day of affliction, of a kind that never was from when there were nations until that day. And in that day all the people, whoever may be found inscribed in the book, will be lifted up.

12:2 And many of those sleeping in the breadth of the earth will arise, some unto everlasting life, but some unto reproach, and some to dispersion and everlasting disgrace.

12:3 And those who are prudent will shine like the luminaries of heaven, and those who learn and master my words, like the stars of heaven unto the era of the ages.

12:4 But you, Daniel, keep secret the decree, and seal up the scroll until the time of the end, while the masses rage on and the earth is filled with injustice.”

12:5 And I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others were standing, one on one side of the river and one on the other side.

12:6 And I spoke to the one clothed with fine linen above the river, “When, therefore, will be the conclusion of the things you have spoken to me, of those astonishing things and their purification?”

12:7 And I heard the one clothed with fine linen, who was above the waters of the one river, “Until an appointed time of the end.” And he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and he swore by the God who lives forever, “The completion of the power of the release of the holy people is for an appointed season and set times and half a time, and all these things will be consummated.”

12:8 And I heard, but I did not understand concerning this appointed season. So I said, “Lord, what is the meaning of this matter, and about whom are these puzzling assertions?”

12:9 And he said to me, “Depart, Daniel, for the divine decrees are hidden and sealed up until many should be tested and sanctified.

12:10 And the sinners will continue to sin, and all the sinners will fail to understand, but those who are discerning will give heed.

12:11 From when the sacrifice is taken away, during all that time, and when the abomination causing desolation was prepared to be set up, one thousand two hundred and ninety days.

 1. 1290 +1335 = 2,625 Years from Dan.12:11-12 marks this time period that will be established.

2. Jehoiakim destroys God’s Scroll and throws it in the fire in Jer. 36:27 in his 5th yr. (Jer. 36:9), which is 603-602 BC.

Jeremiah 36:27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,

Jeremiah 36:28 Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.

Jeremiah 36:29 And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the Lord; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?

Now remember that “the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah” MUST come to pass.  We know at least 3 prophets mentioned him.

2 Chronicles 36:21 To fulfil the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

2 Chronicles 36:22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

2 Chronicles 36:23 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the Lord God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The Lord his God be with him, and let him go up.

This gives us 3 conditions to fulfill that word:
1) TIME – land had to enjoy her sabbaths

2) CYRUS – the king to free them

3) TEMPLE – the 2nd Temple commission to rebuild it.

2nd Prophet:

Ezra 1:1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

Ezra 1:2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

3rd Prophet:

Daniel 9:2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

So even the prophet Daniel formulated the 70 weeks prophecy upon the words of the LORD from Jeremiah!

12:12 Blessed is the one who stands fast and makes it to one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days.

12:13 And you, go! Rest yourself, for there are yet days and seasons until the fulfillment of the consummation. And he should give you rest, and you will arise upon your glory at the end of the age.”
