THE BOOK OF DANIEL

chapter 10

According to the Septuagint OLD GREEK manuscripts, kept hidden from English eyes for thousands of years until 2012!

This is a presentation of the book of Daniel with commentary to help establish the timing of the book, and historical context. I also look at the themes and usage of different words used in context. The translation is from Logos Bible Software where it is called the Lexham English Septuagint (LES - copied with permission from Logos Bible Software).

10 LES

10:1 In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, an oracle was shown to Daniel, who was called by the name Belshazzar. And the vision was true. And the oracle and its great complexity will be understood. And as to the oracle, I perceived it in a vision.

10:2 In those days I, Daniel, was in the process of mourning for three weeks.

10:3 I did not eat pleasant tasting bread; neither meat nor wine entered into my mouth. I did not anoint myself with oil until I had completed three weeks of days.

10:4 And it happened on the twenty-fourth day of the first month that I was on the bank of the great river, which is the Tigris.

10:5 And I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a man clothed in fine linen and girded with fine linen on his loins and light gleamed from the midst of him.

10:6 And his mouth was like the sea, and his face was like an appearance of gleaming light, and his eyes were like torches of fire, and his arms and feet were like gleaming bronze, and the sound of his talking was like the sound of a roaring crowd.

10:7 And I, Daniel, saw this great vision, but the men who were with me did not see this vision. And great dread fell over them, and they fled in haste.

10:8 And I was left alone, and I saw this great vision, and there was not left in me any strength. And behold, my spirit turned in me, into a state of distress, and I had no strength.

10:9 And I did not hear the sound of his talking, for I had fallen upon my face to the ground.

10:10 And behold, a hand came forward to me and raised me up on my knees and on the soles of my feet.

10:11 And he said to me, “Daniel, a man who has received mercy, you are to understand the decrees that I am declaring to you. Now stand in your place, for I am sent to you.” And as he spoke with me concerning this oracle, I stood trembling.

10:12 And he spoke to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set face your to examine and to understand and to abase yourself before the Lord, your God, your petition was heard, and I have come because of your petition.

10:13 Now the commander of the king of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days, and behold, Michael, one of the commanders of the first order, came to help me. And I left him there with the commander of the king of Persia.”

10:14 And he said to me, “I have come to show you what will come upon your people during the last days, for there is still time for days to come.”

10:15 And as he spoke with me these things, I directed my face toward the ground and was silent.

10:16 And behold, as it were the likeness of the hand of a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and talked and said to the one standing before me, “Lord, indeed, when the vision was turned back upon my side against me, there was not even any strength upon me.

10:17 And how will it be possible for the servant to speak with his Lord, and I have become faint, and there is no strength in me, nor any spirit?”

10:18 And he continued and touched me, the one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me.

10:19 And he spoke to me, “Man, you are one having received mercy. Do not fear, be in good health, act like a man, and be strong!” And as he spoke with me, I became strong and said, “Let my Lord speak, for he has strengthened me.”

10:20 And he said to me, “Do you know why I have come to you? And now I will return to do battle with the commander of the king of Persia, and I will go forth, and behold, the commander of the Greeks will come in.

10:21 However, I will show you the first things listed in the register of truth, and there was no one who was helping me against those beings, except Michael, the messenger.”
